Gerald “Jerry” L. O’Toole, 74, of Sioux Falls, SD, died Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 27, 2017, at George Boom Funeral Home & Crematory, Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Private family interment will take place at Hills of Rest Cemetery at a later date. Gerald “Jerry” L. O’Toole, son of James E. and Coral K. (Lausen) O’Toole was born September 4, 1943, in Chippewa County, MN. The family lived in Harrisburg until he was 18, then moved into Sioux Falls. He graduated from Harrisburg High School with the class of 1962. He was united in marriage to Adele Elfert on April 13, 1963, at East Side Lutheran Church. Jerry was a security guard for EROS Data Center for many years and was also employed at John Morrell and Company for over 20 years.
Jerry enjoyed camping when Terry was younger. He was a softball umpire for 29 years. He was also an umpire chief for many of those years. Jerry was the State Secretary for the South Dakota Umpire Association. He was also a member of the Sioux Falls YMCA for over 30 years where he enjoyed playing basketball and raquetball. One of his favorite hobbies was golfing, he could be found at many courses in the Sioux Falls area, with Elmwood being his regular course. After Adele passed he started attending Social Seniors of Sioux Falls where he met many people who became close friends. Jerry loved his cars and you always knew it was him coming down the road in the El Camino or Lincoln.
He is survived by his son, Terry (Karlyn) O’Toole of Sioux Falls; mother, Coral Shatter of Tea, SD; brother, Jim (Pat) O’Toole of Tea, SD; and sister, Kim (Jeff) Zimprich of Huron, SD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Adele in 2015; his father, James Sr.; and son, Kevin.
