Sioux Falls - Darrell Benson, 84, died Thursday, November 15, 2018 at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls.
Darrell Claire Benson was born August 10, 1934 in Chester, South Dakota. He grew up in Chester where he received his education, graduating from Chester High School in 1952. Following graduation, he attended USD in Vermillion, SD.
On August 6, 1954 he was united in marriage with Mary Larson in Flandreau, SD. The couple lived in Chester where Darrell was co-owner of Chester Hardware for 40 years and owned the lumber yard for many years, as well. He also worked at Prostrollo Automotive in Madison for 20 years. Darrell's passions included woodworking and staying busy enjoying various projects with family and friends. He was active in the Elks Club, Chester High School chain gang and was active in Madison High School and Dakota State University athletics. He was a little league coach and was the State Slow Pitch Commissioner of South Dakota. Darrell also participated in many other civic and church activities throughout his life.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 64 years, Mary, of Sioux Falls, SD; his daughter, Krista (Dave) Beeck of Wentworth, SD; his son, Brian Benson of Chester, SD; his grandchildren, Chad (Heidi) Benson of Chester, SD, Tonia (Jon) Meyer of Sioux Falls, SD, Amy (Dave) Larson of Hartford, SD and Greg (Riley) Beeck of New Hope, MN; 9 great grandchildren, Hadley, Carston, Luke, Tenley, Emerson, Karder, Jase, Kerregan and Jessa; his sisters, Nola Meyers of Mitchell, SD and Louann (Tony) Buquor of Sioux Falls, SD; his brother, Denny (Sandy) Benson of Chester, SD; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will begin at 11:00 am Monday at the Halladay-Peterson Chapel of Dow Rummel Village. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00-4:00 pm Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location. A sharing of memories will begin at 3:00 pm.
