The Summit League announced the 2022 All-Summit League Softball Teams and individual awards, with Summit League regular season champion South Dakota State collecting four out of the five individual accolades through a vote of the league's eight head coaches.
South Dakota State sophomore infielder Rozelyn Carrillo was selected as the Player of the Year, while fellow sophomore teammate Grace Glanzer was selected as the Pitcher of the Year. Carrillo also received the inaugural Defensive Player of the Year award with Krista Wood earning her second straight Coach of the Year honor and third overall. Rounding out the individual accolades is St. Thomas' Brooke Ellestad, who was named the Freshman of the Year.
Carrillo was a huge centerpiece in the Jackrabbit lineup, starting all 47 games she played in, including all 20 league contests. In league play, she recorded a league-best .477 batting average and registered a league-high 25 RBI. The Palmdale, Calif., native belted six home runs and compiled league-highs in slugging percentage (.831), total bases (54), OPS (1.358) and was tied for the most hits (31). Overall, Carrillo had the second highest batting average at .405 and was tied for the third-most total home runs at 11 and the second most RBI at 46. Additionally, the sophomore lead the league in overall hits (62) and runs scored (44). Carrillo broke the SDSU program record for most consecutive games with a hit as she currently is riding a 24-game hitting streak heading into the league tournament.
Carrillo also earned the inaugural Defensive Player of the Year honor as the shortstop held a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in league games this season and is one of 11 players with a perfect fielding percentage in league contests. She has turned three double plays in league play and has 29 assists under her belt.
After being named the Freshman of the Year last season, South Dakota State sophomore pitcher Grace Glanzer was named the Pitcher of the Year after leading her squad to an 11-0 mark in the circle in league competition, the lone pitcher to have an undefeated record. In 66.2 innings of work, Glanzer gave up just 11 walks and picked up 51 strikeouts in league contests. Her 0.63 ERA also lead hurlers in league action, and she compiled seven complete-game performances with four shutouts. Glanzer also gave up the fewest runs for qualified pitchers with six earned runs and held opponents to a .185 batting average, which ranks fourth in league games. Glanzer’s season was highlighted by a 10-inning complete performance where she struck out seven batters and allowed no walks in the 8-1 win against North Dakota State.
Ellestad was named the Freshman of the Year after recording the third-highest batting average in league games at .455 and registered 20 hits in 14 league games. Ellestad was the lone Summit League softball student-athlete to be named to the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I Freshman Top 25 selection. Overall, Ellestad leads the league in batting average (.425) and is in the top five in the league in on-base percentage (.455), OPS (1.059) and hits (57).
South Dakota State head coach Krista Wood earned her second straight and third overall Summit League Coach of the Year honor.
